What is Business Intelligence

Business Intelligence refers to the technologies, applications and practices to collect , integrate and convert the business data into information to support the analysis and business decision making.

A firm has various business processes implementing in different systems. For example, the sales process is running on the Point of Sales (POS) system. The replenishment process is running on the Supply Chain system. Each system is focusing in its own operations and running its own data in its own format. It is difficult to obtain the overall picture from individual system for analysis. BI is a solution to integrate the data from various source systems for business analysis.

Business Data are extracted from their business processes (different source systems). They are then integrated and transformed based on the business rules. Finally, they are loaded into an area ready for presentation. We usually call this area as the Data warehouse or the data mart depends on its approach and architecture. Such processes are called the ETL processes (Extract, Transform and Load).

BI applications use the data gathered from a data warehouse / data mart to present the business information for analysis and support decision making. The BI applications include predefined business reports, dynamic reports, dashboard and data mining.
