What is Dimension Table?

Dimensions provide the descriptive context (e.g. when, where, who, which) of the business process event. They provide the descriptive attributes for filtering, displaying and grouping purpose in the BI Reports or other BI tools.

For example, in the business process "Sales", the Date, Store, SalesPerson and Product may be the dimension tables representing the context of when, where, who and which of that event. The SalesPersonName and SalesPersonTitle may be the descriptive attributes (columns) under the SalesPerson dimension.

There are various techniques for modeling dimension tables as below. We will briefly describe them in the coming posts.
